Patagonia Provisions Teams Up on Sustainable Long Root

With a background in learning and development, Nathan Duncan works within the outdoor industry as a Patagonia, Inc., retail manager. One focus for Nathan Duncan is on developing an emerging Patagonia Provisions brand that spans a full range of sustainably sourced regenerative and organic food items.

A September 2021 addition to the Provisions lineup is the Patagonia Provisions Long Root India pale ale (IPA). Developed in collaboration with Portland, Oregon’s Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB), the brew is a traditional West Coast IPA that incorporates all organic ingredients, including Kernza perennial grain.

This wheat variety represents a breakthrough on the part of Kansas-based The Land Institute that is optimal for organic and regenerative agriculture. With lengthy perennial roots, it can thrive with no pesticide application and survive on less water than conventional wheat. At the same time, the long roots help to avoid erosion and sequester higher amounts of carbon that would otherwise remain in the atmosphere. A final sought after attribute is its flavor: Long Root IPA features evergreen hops and citrus notes, as well as a malty aroma and slight bitterness.
